The epipelagic zone is the uppermost of the pelagic zone. In the epipelagic zone there is enough sunlight for photosynthesis to take place. Because photosynthesis is able to take place, this zone has an abbundance of plant life, and because it has so much plant life its able to sustain animal life. Some of the animals in the epipelagic zone include sharks, mackerels, tuna, seals, jellyfish, sea lions, sea turtles, sting rays, and much more. The epipelagic zone stretches from the surface down to the depth where photosynthesis can no longer occur because of the limited light. In general the epipelagic zone is considered to be between the surface down to about 200m, although since light is absorbed quickly with depth, only a small percentage of the sunlight ever reaches this far down.
